Chelsea consider axing Liam Rosenior as crisis deepens

Chelsea are weighing up whether to sack Liam Rosenior after Tuesday night’s damaging 3-0 defeat at Brighton intensified fears over the club’s season.

Senior figures at Stamford Bridge held talks on Wednesday to discuss the future of the 41-year-old, with pressure mounting following a run of dismal results.

The loss marked Chelsea’s seventh defeat in eight matches, leaving their hopes of securing Champions League football hanging by a thread.

For the first time since taking charge in January, Rosenior openly criticised his players, labelling their performance “unacceptable” and “indefensible” as he shifted responsibility onto the squad.

Although the club had planned to assess his position at the end of the campaign, the alarming downturn in form has forced the hierarchy to reconsider their timeline.

It is still unclear whether Rosenior will remain in charge for Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley, despite being less than four months into a long-term contract.

Chelsea’s campaign has unravelled rapidly after a promising start under Rosenior. A heavy 5-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last-16 first leg last month triggered a sharp decline, with the team now on a five-game Premier League losing streak without scoring — their worst such run in over a century.

Club co-owner Behdad Eghbali and co-sporting director Paul Winstanley were present at the Amex Stadium on Tuesday, where frustration among supporters boiled over. Fans directed anger at both the head coach and the club’s ownership, even unveiling a banner calling for BlueCo to step away.

The defeat followed a 1-0 loss to Manchester United just days earlier, after which more than 500 supporters gathered near Stamford Bridge to protest against the club’s direction under its current ownership.

In his post-match comments, Rosenior did not hold back, highlighting his side’s lack of intensity and commitment. He pointed to the fact his players lost “80 per cent of duels” and questioned their “spirit,” describing the display as unacceptable for a club of Chelsea’s stature.
